What is weight loss surgery? in surgical field. It is a simple question but after this surgery you must change your whole lifestyle. Weight loss surgery is known as Bariatric Surgery. This surgery is performed on obese people with body Mass Index (BMI) more than 40.



Being obese creates lots of problems in your body or it is better to say that obese is a disease. This leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors, and incress in mortality ratio. These all problems will be disappere as you start lossing weight after this surgery. After this surgery your sleep, breath and physical activeness often improves dramaticly. There are three basic approaches for weight loss surgery

  1. Stomach stapling, In this stomach size will be decreased   about 6 glass to one glass.
  2. Malabsorptive Procedures, In this food absorption is blocked.
  3. Roux-en-Y, This surgery is combination of both approaches.

Now we come to the basic requirements of this surgery, which are as follows;

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) from 35-40 can also go for Weight Loss Surgery but if they have problems of debates, heart disease, Sleep apnea and high cholesterol.
  • Some doctors also required to loss some weight before going for this surgery.

Before going for the weight loss surgery doctors make you go through an evolution period for various tests and counseling. These tests and counseling helps you to choose best approach of weight loss surgery.

After deciding the best approach of your surgery you will be advised not to take aspirin containing products including aspirin pills and any herbal product one week prior to the surgery. You will be switched on liquids for 48 hours right before the surgery.

On successful bariatric surgery you will have to stay for a short period in hospital and you will be on observation, there may be little complications but not to worry about. When this all done you are good to go.

For few days you are just allowed to have liquids like water and fruit juices and after that you are allowed to have little dense liquid and food like milk or pudding. Next three to four weeks you can have soft foods and after completion of three months you are good to have your regular foods but there is a limit that you can not eat too much again.

After all this you must be willing to have the results, so in common there may be weight loss of a pound per day within the first three months. It mostly depends on the surgical procedure adopted. There may be dramatic weight loss, in result there may be need of another surgery for removal of excess skin.
